What is Sleep Hygiene?

Everyonesleep has heard of dental hygiene, which consists of using devices such as toothbrush and floss with proper technique to keep your teeth healthy. Sleep hygiene consists of habits or practices to help get a better night's sleep. Here are a few simple things you can do to try to get a better night of sleep:

  • Keep a regular schedule of going to bed and waking up so your body has a normal sleep cycle.
  • Avoid alcohol within 3 hours of bedtime
  • Avoid caffeine. It can take up to 18 hours to be eliminated from your system as you get older.
  • Don't watch TV in bed. The blue light makes your body think it is daytime.
  • Reading an IPad or other electronic device also gives off blue light. An orange filter over the device can screen out the blue light.
  • Total darkness is desirable. Use an eye mask if you don't have a dark room at night.
